Our research focus
Our group is interested in the causes and consequences of mitochondrial DNA instability, especially how mitochondrial DNA instability is signaled to the rest of the cell. We use a combination of in vitro biochemistry, mammalian cell culture and yeast genetics to explore the basic mechanisms that ensure the maintenance of this small but (in most organisms) essential genome.

Join us as a postdoc fellow!
Join our research group at Umeå University for a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship focused on uncovering the proteins that safeguard mitochondrial DNA stability in eukaryotes. Our lab combines cell and molecular biology with biochemistry to answer fundamental questions about mitochondrial function and its role in health and disease. We offer a stimulating, collegial, and international environmentRead More -
Topoisomerase paper accepted!
We are proud to announce that the work of Cyrielle, Erika and others on the differences of the human nuclear and mitochondrial Topoisomerase 1 enzymes is now accepted in Nucleic Acids Research! A big thanks to everyone involved: Cyrielle, Erika, Josefin, Aiswarya and Gosia. Also fun that all authors are from our own lab.In thisRead More -
Two articles in one PNAS issue
Check out the latest issue of PNAS that contains two (2!) very interesting articles on mtDNA stability that we contributed to: Awoyomi OF, Gorospe CM, Das B, Mishra P, Sharma S, Diachenko O, Nilsson AK, Tran P, Wanrooij PH†, Chabes A†.RRM2B deficiency causes dATP and dGTP depletion through enhanced degradation and slower synthesis.
